You are in: About Us » Dr. Julian Smit

Julian was born in Cape Town in 1970. With interests in mathematics and geography as well as the construction industry, he went on from school to study surveying at the University of Cape Town. He graduated with a BSc (Survey) degree in 1993 and went on to pursue postgraduate studies in photogrammetry under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Heinz Rüther.

In 1997 he achieved a PhD degree from UCT for his thesis entitled "3D Measurement of Textured Surfaces Using Digital Photogrammetric Techniques". This PhD research focussed on the development of a close-range photogrammetric measurement system for the monitoring of surface deformations as a result of pre-conditioning blasts in deep-level gold mining.

Since the completion of his doctoral studies Julian was employed as a lecturer for the Department of Geomatics, responsible for photogrammetry lectures and supervision of student projects.

In January 1998 he was employed as a project manager for a local aerial survey company. He was responsible for all aspects of the running of mapping projects and client liaison.

During April 2003 he started AfriMap Geo-Information Services together with Prof. Dr. Heinz Rüther and Dr. Graeme van der Vlugt.
